Varicocele 

A varicocele occurs when the veins in your scrotum become swollen and enlarged. It's like a varicose vein that you get in your legs. It can feel like a bag of worms with deep colour.

It usually appears on one of your testicles, usually the left side. You can usually see it when you are standing, but not when you are lying down because of pushing inside.

It is very uncomfortable or painful although it is harmless in nature. And it can affect your fertility or cause your ovaries to shrink. This condition is very common and usually affects young people. About 10 to 15 out of every 100 men have this problem now because of the wrong lifestyle. It is not uncommon for boys to develop varicocele as they go through puberty.

What may be the causes?

Doctors aren't sure till now why this condition occurs. It could be a problem with the flow of blood to the sperm which carries blood to the testicles. If the valves inside the veins in the cord don't work as they should, blood backs up and the veins dilate.  

Each ovum contains a spermatic cord. The spermatic cord contains veins, arteries, and nerves Veins have valves that allow blood to flow in one direction toward the heart. If a valve in the spermatic cord doesn't close as it should, blood backs up and creates a varicocele. When varicocele occurs in teenage boys, it's often due to rapid puberty. Ovaries require more blood than normal, and any kind of problem in the veins doesn't require the blood to go anywhere.

Symptoms:

Varicocele rarely hurt You may not know you have one until you or your doctor sees it. If you have pain, it may be –

• Change from weak to sharp.  

• It is difficult to stand alone for a long time and it is worse if you will stand for a long time along with the delay of urine.

Treatment:

Not all varicocele require treatment because it doesn’t bother the patient. Treatment is needed when one of the symptoms will be seen in you:-

• You are a boy whose left testicle is growing smaller than the right.

 There is no medicine to prevent varicocele If you have pain, your doctor may ask you to take ibuprofen for the pain. Varicocelectomy 

The doctor will make an inch cut in your scrotum. They will use a magnifying glass or microscope to get a better look at the small veins. Laparoscopic surgery: 

The doctor makes a small cut and uses it to insert a tube that contains surgical tools along with a special camera for identifying all default parts. Percutaneous embolization:

They will use X-rays and insert a balloon or coil through the tube to guide them to the varicocele. This blocks the blood flow to the varicocele and causes it to shrink.
